As the season of thankfulness unfolds, it's a wonderful time to reflect on the things we hold dear, both personally and professionally. For me, as a CPA, gratitude extends to the tools and opportunities that allow me to help clients achieve financial success. Here are four powerful tools I'm thankful for as a CPA:
The Standard Deduction
The standard deduction is a vital tool in simplifying tax filing for many. For single filers, it's $15,750; married couples filing jointly can benefit from a deduction of $31,500, and heads of household enjoy a $23,625 deduction. When itemized deductions don't surpass these amounts, taking the standard deduction is often the smartest choice. It’s like giving clients a stress-free option during tax season.
Retirement Account Contributions
Retirement planning is a cornerstone of financial stability. I appreciate the opportunities presented by contributions to retirement accounts. For IRA contributions, the limit is up to $7,000 (or $8,000 for those 50+). Meanwhile, 401(k) contributions can be up to $23,500 (or $31,000 for those 50+). It's essential to note enhanced catch-up contributions for ages 60–63 in 2025, though limits revert at age 64. Whether clients prefer Traditional or Roth contributions, these tools support long-term financial health.
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)
HSAs provide a triple tax advantage, a rare find in the financial world. Individuals with coverage can contribute $4,300, while family coverage allows up to $8,550, with an additional $1,000 catch-up for those 55 and older. The tax-deductible contributions, tax-free growth, and tax-free withdrawals for qualified expenses make HSAs a favorite among clients aiming for tax-efficient healthcare savings.
The Child Tax Credit (CTC)
Helping families afford the cost of raising children makes the Child Tax Credit invaluable. The credit offers up to $2,200 per qualifying child under 17, with up to $1,700 potentially refundable. It’s structured to phase out starting at $200,000 for single filers and $400,000 for joint filers, ensuring it aids those who need it most.
As the year winds down, I encourage everyone to review these opportunities and seek professional guidance to maximize their benefits. A CPA's role is not just about crunching numbers but enhancing confidence and planning for a brighter financial future.
